Busting Windows

Several weeks ago I attended the 19th annual Divas Simply Singing concert in Los Angeles. The Divas concert is a yearly benefit for HIV/Aids research and prevention hosted by Sheryl Lee Ralph. It’s a simple premise, one Diva accompanied by a pianist for one song for each Diva. The Benefit began as an effort by Ms. Ralph during a time when the African-American HIV/Aids community was being completely ignored even as celebrities like Elton John and Elizabeth Taylor were raising money, which largely funded White gay organizations. She likes to tell the story of how she was on Broadway in the early eighties when her male gay friends began to die off and no one did anything about it except to ignore the disease and to blame the men’s sexuality for causing their deaths. This was especially true in the African-American community and most notably in the Black churches. As the disease has grown to include more and more women, the focus of the concert has reflected the change and Ms. Ralph has continued the Divas Benefit as an effort to raise awareness of the disease and it’s affects on women of color.

This year the concert was preceded by a short film, starring Ms. Ralph of course, which told the story of a woman who had recently discovered her husband was cheating on her with another man. Her female friends who joined in a discussion of the problem surrounded her. There was quite a bit of male and gay male bashing contained in the dialogue and I was somewhat surprised by this tone coming from Ms. Ralph who has always been a strong supporter of the gay community. But as I’ve said the focus of this benefit has changed. However, it was what happened several Divas into the concert, which upset me most. Loretta Devine appeared with Ms. Ralph in the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls and usually performs at the benefit. This year Ms. Devine took the stage and before she began singing she stated, “This is for all the down low brothers out there.” The crowd responded by whooping, hollering and clapping their approval and I sat there stunned and wondering why anyone would applaud this behavior. Then the pianist began playing the intro to her song and Ms. Devine sang “I Bust The Windows Out Your Car”…the crowd went crazy. Jazmine Sullivan’s song tells the story of a woman wronged by a lover who then takes revenge on his car.

Now I’m all for busting the windows out of the car of a cheating lover and maybe even maiming a few body parts, I just think closer examination should be made of this phenomenon. This down low syndrome, this monster the black community loves to hate is one they created themselves by demonizing and vilifying homosexuality. The Black churches and the Christian faith in general teaches these men to hate themselves for who they are and not everyone is able to overcome this hatred and be true to themselves. And don’t be fooled the down low is nothing new and certainly is not exclusive to the Black community. The men who practice this lifestyle do so because they want to be accepted by society. Some of them think they can “overcome” their feelings by entering into marriage or relationships with women and some really do enjoy bisexuality. Most importantly though these men want what they were taught. They want the wife two kids, a family and the white picket fence just like everyone else and they may see the down low as their only means to achieve it. Unfortunately, these men have been taught to believe that for them coming out is not an option and many opt for suicide instead.

I’m not saying these men are completely innocent. There is no excuse for cheating and lying to your mate and everyone should be held accountable for his or her actions. When a partner is unknowingly exposed to any type of disease it’s simply wrong and any one who cheats and does so without using a condom is an obvious idiot. I’m just saying examine society’s role in this and the Black community in particular. Just look at the Divas benefit. When it was a benefit largely for men of color it was all but ignored by the Black population and largely supported by white West Hollywood gays. The show I attended recently had an audience that appeared to be mostly African-American heterosexual couples, a growing trend for the Divas concert in recent years.

So once it became a disease that affected African-American women black people got behind it to support Ms. Ralph’s efforts. It appears that as long as this was a disease that largely affected gay men, even gay men of color, our community chose to ignore it. But what has happened is that the disease has begun to affect woman of color and this is a direct result of the homophobia that permeates the Black community and although the Black churches are not solely responsible, they have created a climate of intolerance and should be held accountable for the role they play in spreading this homophobia. We have a responsibility to examine the reasons why African-American women are the most rapidly growing segment of those infected with the HIV virus and what we the African-American community can do to change it.

  1. African American Women as well as Hispanic represent a fast growing segment of women of color infected by the HIV virus. Women are infected for various reasons; prostitution, drug use, medical mishaps, infidelity………
Women have had to accept the following realities as well; the decreasing population of men of color available for relationships/interfaces due to:
Incarceration-What happen’s in prison Stays in prison. Love the one your with.
War (crime on the streets of USA and in Iraq)
    Socio-Economical mismatches ($$$$ vs education)
    Homosexuality
I feel the Simply Divas benefit has expanded over the years because the constituency that they serve as expanded. Once awareness of the situation was presented, and women impacted were asked to stand up, the shift happened. Women, in general, throughout the United States and the World will ALWAYS sympathize with women. There is a common bond known throughout that fighting ‘victimization’ is one of the major tenet of the women’s rights movement. I do not look at ‘our men’ as victims.
Oprah had five women on her show last week that were infected by one single man. He is in prison today for carry a deadly weapon –‘his body’ and spreading the disease knowingly.
I applaud Sheryl Lee Ralph for standing up for something she believes in. I applaud her for continuing to keep awareness of the disease ‘fresh’ in everyone’s mind. I applaud them standing up for social justice! For the people who are on the Down-Low I feel they were just pointing the “spotlight” for awareness. It is no different than posting the names of sex-offenders in the neighborhood-awareness.
What I notice is the black gay men (as a whole) do not stand up for themselves in what is considered political issues; gay rights, education and health. It is not going to ‘be easy’. Nothing that Black people have overcome ever is. Are Black gay men waiting for someone else to lead the battle of their issue?
If you chose to live ‘your best life’ do it full out. Attend churches that celebrate the GOD in you, and know who you truly are. Not the ones that ‘hold you’ in bondage using the words of the Christ Jesus and the almighty GOD promote their judgements

  2. To state that homosexuality is one of the reasons for the decreasing population of men available to African-American women is absolutely ridiculous but is a common misconception in our community. This premise suggests that homosexuality is something new and available as a choice for heterosexual men who may be seeking options. FACT: If you are not attracted to the same sex you will not become so simply because you are fed up with women or because it is the latest fad. FACT: Same sex attraction is something you have or don’t have and cannot be developed as a product of circumstances or environment. FACT: The majority of African-American households attend Black churches on a regular basis where they ARE judged continually on how they lead they’re lives. These are the churches most African-Americans attend from the time of infancy where they continue to program the minds of young Homosexuals into believing that what they feel is sinful and wrong. Not everyone is aware of or has access to same gender accepting churches. As for the implication that African-American Gay men are portrayed as victims, there are plenty of African-American Gay organizations and leaders, The Black Pride Society, Blackrefer.com and MAPLA to name a few and Keith Boykin is an outspoken and highly respected African-American gay man who regularly contributes to CNN. The suggestion that African-American gay men are waiting for someone else to lead the battle is insulting and sounds somewhat like White people who suggest that Black people should get up off their asses and stop being victims. As for the man who was sensationalized on Oprah, of course he should be imprisoned in fact if he wasn’t then he should be charged with attempted murder. However, he doesn’t represent all of African-American gay men any more than the DC sniper represented all African-Americans. You said yourself that women are infected with HIV for various reasons, so why do people, including Sheryl Lee Ralph’s short film, continually point to the “down low” syndrome? It’s an easy target and it speaks to the homophobic “fear” in our community. Perhaps you’re naïve or just blind to the fact that OUR community is simply not accepting of homosexuality or maybe it’s because you have not been subjected to the implications.

  3. If you notice homosexuality was the “last” reason listed. In my opinion it is ‘weighted’ the least because when you divide the “pie” it represents a sliver. My point made reference to the daunting fact the women outnumber men in the US. Then the subset of that is AA women are faced with a few statistics as well (Look at the movie with Sanae Latham). I never suggested or state that homosexuality is the favorite drink of choice at the sportsbar, I STATED THAT HOMSEXUALITY which happens to be MEN are not available as partners to women. That would imply that even though the gender says MEN it must state that the total population is unavailable because of genetics.
Well professor thanks for the class 101 on homosexuality and attraction. My words stated that men ARE NOT VICTIMS. Women are portrayed as victims which is why that support .
My statement implies that BLACK GAY MEN must stand for themselves separate from the WHITE GAY MEN to get their particular message across. And do so politically! White Gay men are NOT delivering the message, Especially at Black Churches.

  4. Whether it's the first or last reason, gay men should NEVER be a part of that equation simply by definition. To include them even as a "sliver" only suggests that they were available and at some point taken away, which is entirely untrue and only reinforces homophobic paranoia. Your tone most certainly did suggest that African-American gay men are victims in that they do not "stand up for themselves" which is why I pointed out the number of African-American gay organizations. Just because you are not aware of them or what they have done politically does not mean they don't exist. Efforts are most certainly being made to change the homophobic culture contained in Black churches, again simply because you are not aware of these efforts does not negate their existence. In the meantime these churches continue their vile homophobic practices. The point of the Divas benefit is to raise money to fund the African-American gay organizations to which I referred, as the White gay organizations don't. The point of the post and the truth is that African-Americans were wholly unsupportive of the benefit until African-American heterosexual women began to be infected, period. And the excuse that people are more sensitive to the plight of women vs. gays is just that, an excuse and a rather insensitive one at that.
