This Week In Let’s Blame President Obama and Other Right Wing Nonsense

Former Vice President Dick Cheney wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal in which he stated “Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many". I like so many others naturally assumed he was speaking of former President George W. Bush…silly me, he meant President Obama. So in ole Dickie’s opinion, President Obama is worse than the entire cast of presidents who served while slavery was an established institution which allowed for an entire race of people to be systematically raped, tortured and murdered on a daily basis. Worse than those who reigned while countless Native American populations were slaughtered and their land was stolen. Worse than those who allowed Jim Crow legislation and institutional racism to thrive uncontested for years in the south. Really? In the Wall Street Journal article, Mr. Cheney was attempting to blame the President for the recent conflicts arising in Iraq. This from the man who along with President Bush lied to the American public about imaginary Weapons of Mass Destruction in order to wage against Iraq in the first place. In the guise of liberating the Iraqi people, billions of dollars were saved for oil service companies like Halliburton. You remember Halliburton the company where Cheney is the former CEO. This is the same man who along with President Dubya is responsible for the loss of more than 4,500 American lives and over 100,000 Iraqis. I gotta say that statement takes a pair of massively huge cojones Mr. Cheney. He along with many conservative critics believe President Obama should have held American troops in Iraq indefinitely and feel his weak decision to remove troops is the cause for the current unrest. However, these critics leave out the fact that the President of Iraq and the Iraqi Parliament voted to have American troops leave and that President Bush signed a binding agreement to do so before leaving office in 2008. Yep, signed off before President Obama even entered office. Of course Senator Grumpy Pants chimed in insisting that the solution to the current problem is to simply bomb Iraq.

The alleged mastermind said to be responsible for the Benghazi attack was captured this week and of course Republican politicians and pundits claimed it must be some type of diversion by the Obama administration like perhaps to draw attention to Hilary Clinton’s 2016 presidential bid…really? These idiots bombarded the media with ridiculous questions and assertions. Why was it a secret? Why was it a raid? Where was Obama? Where was Hilary? Where’s Waldo and where was he when Kennedy was shot? Is there anything here that can be used to repeal Obamacare or commence impeachment proceedings? Sheesh. The only way the President could get love form these people would be to invade the wrong country, turn record surpluses into deficits and use the banking industry to wreck the national economy…oh wait.

Apparently Rick Perry the governor of Texas feels alcoholics should not be allowed to marry.  Well actually he likened homosexuality to alcohol addiction and based on his views on marriage equality one would conclude…well you get the idea. Seems the ole Governor was defending Texas legislation which would allow Reparative Therapy for children. You know the so-called therapy where they attempt to change the sexual orientation of homosexuals with aversion techniques such as electric shock treatments to the genitals and nausea inducing drugs dispensed while showing the patient homoerotic stimuli. The same Reparative Therapy deemed harmful to individuals both physically and mentally and denounced by virtually every mainstream medical and scientific organization in the country. The Reparative Therapy based on age old assumptions that homosexuality is a mental disorder that can and should be cured. Assumptions that reinforce anti-gay bigotry based on the theory that being homosexual is somehow harmful or wrong and a person can and should change his/her sexual orientation. You know, nonsense. I’d like to see Governor Dumb Ass hooked up to electric shock treatment to see if he can change his sexual orientation. Or at the very least maybe it can be used to cure that drinking problem because being drunk is the only excuse for his ridiculous statements.

Same Ole Story

In the days since last I wrote a lot has happened but not much has changed. Conservative politicians are still walking around pretending that just because a Black man was elected president twice, racism no longer exists and apparently there are members of the Supreme Court who agree with them. These are the same clowns who continue to cut unemployment benefits, food stamps and training programs and then blame the poor for being poor. The same party of obstructionist who failed on their promise to make President Obama a one term president and continually blame him for the woes of the world. Last week President Obama negotiated the release of the only American prisoner of war in Afghanistan, Bowe Bergdahl. In the five years he has been held as a prisoner of war, conservative politicians have fiercely advocated for his release including Republican Senator John McCain who in February stated he would support a prisoner exchange for Bergdahl’s release. Of course the minute it was announced that President Obama had negotiated the release these same conservatives who had accused the President of dragging his heels on the matter flip flopped, including Senator Pinocchio Hypocrite McCain. Seriously, can someone please tell Senator Sour Grapes that he lost the 2008 presidential campaign, he seems not to have gotten the memo. The man needs help he’s suffering from a severe case of POTUS envy. Anyway, all of a sudden Bergdahl was transformed from prisoner of war to a deserting Taliban sympathizer and the President was accused of everything from behaving like an autonomous king (courtesy of Senator Mark Rubio) to abusing executive powers and threatened for the umpteenth time with impeachment (thank you Senator Ted Cruz). Of course there were some Hitler Nazi references a few Benghazi’s and threats to repeal Obamacare thrown in for good measure. Sheesh.

Meanwhile, Donald Sterling the Master of the Clippers Plantation went on an incoherent sociopathic racist rant in a conversation with his mistress. (I say mistress because I’m much too polite to call her a gold digging manipulating street whore…oops) There was something said about her screwing all the Black men she wants as long as she’s not seen in public with them or brings Black people to his Clippers games. Oh and he takes good care of his slaves employees because he gives them things. In an attempt to exonerate himself he agreed to an interview with Anderson Cooper where he continued his dementia fueled foot in mouth tirade attacking Earvin Magic Johnson stating, “I think he should be ashamed of himself. I think he should go into the background. And what does he do for black people? He hasn’t done anything.” He also implied that the original taped conversation was a set-up so that Magic could become the owner of the Clippers (actually not a bad plan) and questioned Magic’s status as a role model to the Black community saying, "Big, Magic Johnson, what has he done?, He's got AIDS."…wow.  So we should ignore the 20 plus years of Magic Johnson investing in and making charitable contributions to the African-American community. Instead because this nut ball was able to buy the silence of the L.A. chapter of the NAACP with his donation, we should just ignore Sterling’s well-documented decades long history of being a racist bigoted L.A. slumlord, illegally evicting Black and Latino tenants form his buildings.  We should ignore the lawsuit filed by former Clippers GM Elgin Baylor against this racist fossil for age and racial discrimination. I mean after all we have a Black president so racism must be dead...right?

Finally in completely unrelated news, Beyonce’s sister Solange comically kicked Jay Z’s ass in an elevator fueling countless expert explanations and comments for her rage. Among my favorites:

  • He looked at her funny.
  • That's the first hit she's had in years.
  • He’s got 100 problems now.
  • She was drunk and took something the wrong way. (Mean drunks are the worst.)
  • She’s simply upset because her name is Solange. (Wouldn’t you be? Sounds like a former Soviet bloc eastern European country.)
Oh and Jean Kasem wife of the ailing Casey Kasem threw raw meat at his daughter in an apparent act of defiance after being court ordered to release him to her care. WTF??!!!

Two Michaels

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!...What? Ok, ok I know I’m a little late but it’s been a busy year so far. I assume everyone is done with their New Year’s resolutions as the annual 1st of the year “I’m gonna lose this weight or else” crowd has dissipated from the gym. Seriously every year at the same time they sluggishly storm the gym in groups of 2 to 3 and take over all the machines. The problem is they have no training so they sit around taking up space in their little cliques holding inane conversations about how much weight they’ve pledged to lose, only to gently disappear after about a month or so with the same weight they brought with them…but I digress.

Yes, it’s been a busy year so far but not too busy for the conservative nut ball army as they started the year strong. It appears that white privilege is alive and well as once again black fear has outweighed the criminal justice system and the murderer of another African-American teenage boy goes unpunished. To be clear I know Mr. Michael Dunn was convicted of attempted murder so he will serve time but he managed to skate on the more severe charge of first degree murder, for now anyway. And can someone please explain to me how he’s convicted of trying to murder 3 unsuccessfully but not the actual murder? Also, if the jury didn’t want to convict Dunn of 1st degree murder they could have opted for 2nd degree or manslaughter…they chose none. Jurors who obviously thought it was self-defense would not convict on any charge. So this man who now claims he’s the victim (shades of Zimmerman) says he feared for his life as the teenagers were playing “loud thug music”, cursing, talking loud and well generally behaving like teenagers. In his delusional entitled mindset he felt he had no other option as they were disrespecting him, because after all he is white. So when they refused his demand to lower the music, he kills the victim, leaves the scene, orders a pizza and takes a nap. Later when the police inform him none of the teenagers had records he says “they must have somehow flown under the radar, because they were bad”. He also wrote a very telling letter from jail which read in part "It is spooky how racist everyone is up here and how biased towards blacks all the courts are. The jail is full of blacks and they all act like thugs." Um, biased towards Blacks? I guess that explains why the jails are so full of them but maybe someone should send him Webster’s definition of bias for future use of the word. The bottom line is a rational person doesn’t shoot and kill teenagers because he doesn’t like their music or feels disrespected. Unfortunately the jury consisted of those who had made up their minds before the first shot was even fired.

Also in the 1st of the year news there’s the possibility of an out gay man joining the NFL. The news came from SEC co-defensive player of the year and University of Missouri graduate Michael Sam, who happens to be African-American and who bravely made his announcement prior to the NFL draft. I will say his coming out was met with mostly positive reaction. Of course the bible thumping, religiosity spouting, homophobic bigots showed up in droves because as you know the bible explicitly states that there are to be no gay players in the NFL. Not to mention the “what’s the big deal” idiots who continuously fail to grasp the historical significance of his announcement and the impact it will have on perceptions of gay men…so let me address them first. I’ve stated in previous blog post that just because it’s not a big deal to your straight, narrow minded, close viewed ass and you are unable to or refuse to comprehend that it’s big news to the thousands of gay youth who have been taught to hate who they are and told they are destined to burn in hell doesn’t mean it’s not a big deal. Maybe it's a big deal because he is shattering stereotypes of gay people and has the potential to be the first openly gay player in the NFL.  Of course it's big news but it wouldn’t be if so many people weren't still so damn intolerant.

Like I said the usual suspects showed up condemning his soul to hell but what I found interesting were the detractors from within the NFL. Anonymous coaches were quoted in Sports Illustrated saying “at this point in time it's still a man's-man game”…because as we all know gay men are not real men. And what about “if you knowingly bring someone in there with that sexual orientation, how are the other guys going to deal with it? It's going to be a big distraction”…only if you allow it to be one buddy. Of course there are never any team distractions in professional sports are there? You know like wife beating, murder trials, drugs or dog killers...right?

Then there was the ridiculous statement from New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Velma who said, “Imagine if he's the guy next to me, and you know, I get dressed, naked, taking a shower, the whole nine, and it just so happens he looks at me, how am I supposed to respond?" Ok, apparently I need to make a few things clear to the straight men of the world. First of all stop assuming that every gay man wants to see you naked and have sex with you. Michael Sam who was out to his teammates at the University of Missouri was a frequent visitor to the team locker room and shower and managed to get by without attacking a single straight teammate. This idea that showering with a gay man is something new is ridiculous. (Note to straight men: We’ve been showering with you since the 7th grade.) The implication that when he moves to the NFL he will be unable to control his physical desires in the showers and start humping anything moving is as stupid as it sounds. And just so you know, Jonathan Velma you can’t catch the gay simply by being in close proximity to one. To answer your question, what do you say if he should happen to look at you? I don’t know how about, “Excuse me but because of my narrow minded homophobic fears and insecure sexuality I’m assuming that because you glanced my way it may somehow be a sexual move on your part towards me because you know in my self-delusional world I’m like, all that and could surely pose for the naked edition of ESPN magazine and I know you predatory gays have trouble controlling your desires when it comes to hyper macho straight men such as myself and you couldn’t possibly be here to, you know just take a shower, so could you please close or divert your eyes for the remainder of our locker room session or at least control the urge to have sex with me because I know you must constantly be thinking of me and certainly not of our team’s win-loss record, the game we just played or your plans for the evening, thanks.” He may look at you like you’re crazy in fact it may turn him off and cause him to reconsider any possible friendship he may have been contemplating with you, his teammate but ultimately isn’t that your goal? I don’t know, works for me.

Duck Tales

I need to first state that I have never watched Duck Dynasty and in fact have no intention of ever watching it. Also, I firmly believe a book should not be judged by its cover but after seeing the promo pics for this show and what the cast looks like my question is why aren’t people more surprised that these folks have been on the air for as long as they have without blurting out the “n” word. So the patriarch of this show about duck hunters living like the Beverly Hillbillies from the fortune they’ve created by selling “Duck Calls” (Ooh, Must See TV) was quoted in an article for GQ Magazine…wait, GQ? Again have ya seen the promo pics? What the hell was GQ thinking or are have their subscriptions levels sunk so low that they’re willing to interview celebrity hillbilly fowl hit men. Anyway, this mallard patriarch, wanna be preacher, Phil Robertson was asked to define sin by a GQ interviewer. Here’s what he said “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there, bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and those men. Sin is sin, and they are no different from people who engage in bestiality or terrorists. But I do not judge them, that is up to God." Ok, let me just say this, we really need to stop pretending that religion is an excuse to be distasteful, vulgar, and offensive. It is both distasteful and vulgar to compare homosexuality to having sex with animals, it is offensive to compare homosexuality to terrorist who kill and maim innocent people. As far as this cherry-picking Bible thumpers claim of not judging, TMZ just posted a video of a sermon Mr. Robertson gave in 2010 at a Pennsylvania church where he calls gay people "shameful, perverse, heartless, faithless, senseless God-haters that are destined for the burning pits of hell." Nope no judgment, none at all.

In the same article this scholar of joyous religiosity was asked for his views on race. He alleges he "never" saw black people mistreated during the pre-civil rights era in his home state of Louisiana and contends that African-Americans were more content under Jim Crow…yep, he said that. Specifically he said "Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash," because you know there has to be an explanation for him hanging out with the Blacks. Then he said “They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word! Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare. You say, were they happy? They were godly, they were happy, no one was singing the blues.”…I don’t even know where to begin. So in his white trash world, (his words not mine) African-Americans were treated fairly and equally, there were no lynchings, everyone had the right to vote and we all lived in one big beautiful separate but equal world. There we were, African-Americans singing and dancing a jig in the field enjoying that smoldering hot Louisiana sun, not a care in the world and what do you know, along came that pesky Civil Rights movement which ruined all those good times with their unfounded demands for fairness and racial equality. Boy, if more people like Phil Robertson had simply spoken up we may have been spared the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King and his gang of radicals messing up that good thing we had going…seriously, this man is a complete idiot. From where does he think the blues were bred? This is exactly the type of racist person Oprah spoke of when she said "There are still generations of people, older people, who were born and bred and marinated in it, in that prejudice and racism, and they just have to die".

Of course as soon as the A&E network suspended his ass the Right Wing First Amendment Right nuts showed up with claims of his rights being trampled. Note to conservatives: "Free speech" does not mean "free from all response or criticism." THIS IS NOT A FREE SPEECH ISSUE! Free Speech does not mean free from the repercussions of employers or the general Public. The First Amendment protects a person's speech from GOVERNMENT suppression only. Free speech is about whether the government can restrict your speech, not your right to say stupid shit on TV. This man can continue to promote the biblical values of hating a group based on archaic philosophies till the cows come home but he should know that with free speech come consequences. If you make ridiculous ignorant statements denying the degradation of Jim Crow laws and forced segregation and instead envision Black people laboring in the fields dancing and singing, you’re going to be called on it. And for all those Republican politicians who were quick to come to his defense in fact stating they stand behind him and his values, Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal thanks once again for the minority reach out.

A White Christmas

I’ve been a little busy lately and haven’t had a chance to write but that hasn’t stopped the always entertaining nonsensical world of bigoted conservatives from turning. In the spirit of the Christmas season right wing staple and the always “fair & balanced” FOX News in an apparent effort to continue the Republican Minority Outreach Program has declared to kids that both Santa Claus and Jesus Christ were “most definitely White”. This despite what those in what they constantly refer to as “the liberal media” may have them believe. Megyn Kelly a Fox News reporter was addressing an article written by Aisha Harris for Slate.com who wrote “just maybe Santa Claus doesn't have to be white all the time and maybe can be all things to all people. This apparently pissed Ms. Kelly off as with all the whiteness she could muster she went on a tirade declaring “for all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white. But this person may be just arguing that we should also have a black Santa. But, you know, Santa is what he is.” She argued that the origins of Santa Claus relate to St. Nicholas who she described as a White European 4th-Century Christian saint and told Ms. Harris that “Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn't mean it has to change." Wow. Now putting aside the ridiculousness of the idea of arguing about one man with eight flying reindeer, one with a glowing red nose no less, delivering presents in one night to everybody on the planet, let’s just check the facts of the origins of the character.

While it is true that there was a St. Nicholas, he is far and removed from what we see as Santa Claus today. The real St. Nicholas, who the myth of Santa Claus is based on, was born in ancient Greece in a conquered territory which is now present day Turkey, and would likely have been a lot more brown or olive skinned than today's version. He certainly would not have been blue-eyed, lily white and rosy cheeked. So if Fox News and Ms. Kelly are arguing historical accuracy they have sorely failed. Anglo-Saxon Europeans took this Saint and incorporated pagan European beliefs and reimagined him to suit their own needs. As with most things, White America pounced on another opportunity to rewrite history (seriously Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra?) and capitalize on the myth, resulting in Santa as we in America know him today. A version of Santa by the way that has only existed in his current incarnation since the early to mid-1900's. What Megyn Kelly and Fox News are missing in their goal to stroke their old, white audience seeing all things through their limited scope of the world, is that there is no one true definition of the character of Santa Claus. Each country has their own definition of Santa Claus and each celebrates that character in drastically different ways. Brazil has Papai Noel, Portugal has Pai Natal, Italy Babbo Natale and other than the standard red suit and white beard, none of them resemble the version concocted by America’s Madison Avenue to sell toys. So, considering this amount of variation alone, there is likely an African Santa Claus that fits their countries regions and traditions. Santa Claus isn't a character that needs to be defined in a one size fits all kind of way. He can represent each country and their traditions and has already done so for hundreds of years in certain cases so why couldn’t he as Ms. Harris wrote, “be all things to all people”.

Unfortunately, Ms. Kelly didn’t limit her tirade with her version of the jolly old elf. Nope she felt the need to go one step further declaring to the kids who for some reason may have been tuned in to her 11 PM newscast instead of having their little asses in bed, “You know, Jesus was a white man, too!” Again, Wow! Seriously, she went on to state that it’s a “verifiable fact” that Jesus was white. Ok, I’m not gonna spend a whole lot of time on this one. Let me just say this, I know it may be hard for the Fox News team to relate to anything non-white but Jesus of Nazareth was most certainly dark skinned. He was born in Galileo which is modern day Palestine. Jesus of Nazareth was not white-skinned, he was not European, he was a Jew who lived in the land of Israel, IN THE MIDDLE EAST! There weren’t a whole lot of lily white people hanging around chilling out in the area at the time, so I’m willing to bet that he looked a lot more like me and less like the version you may have hanging on your wall depicting him as a pale blue-eyed, Abercrombie Fitch model with long flowing hair. And even if he wasn’t as black as Wesley Snipes you can be sure that if he were around today Fox News would have him on a terrorist watch list or worse yet label him a Marxist left wing liberal hippie and he would most certainly be “stopped and frisked” by the NYPD... seriously, hair like wool and feet which shone like bronze? C’mon Megyn.

Better Off Ted

Has anyone else noticed how much Texas U.S. Senator Ted Cruz resembles Mr. Haney from Green Acres?  You remember him he was always “Johnny on-the-spot” showing up out of nowhere whenever Oliver Douglas needed something and ready to sell him anything but what he actually needed. Seriously, Google Mr. Haney and Ted Cruz’s picture comes up, the only thing missing is the hat and that stupid tie. So Mr. Haney Cruz sold his Republican colleagues in the house on the idea that they could shut down the government until their insane demands were met. He convinced them that by shutting down the government they could somehow defund the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare as it is more commonly referred, which is in fact a two year old legislation passed by both houses, signed into law by the President and finally upheld by the Supreme Court as completely constitutional. So sour grapes Cruz and his Tea Party idiot allies commandeered the House of Representatives and took the government hostage. Now call me paranoid but it seems to me that a political party who has lost an argument, i.e. election and then tries to force their will on the nation by threatening the economy is behaving a bit loony. But you can’t blame the Republicans as we all know it’s President Obama’s fault that they went off their rockers…being Black and President was just a bridge too far for them (I think they’ve finally snapped). The result of this crazy ass Tea Party fueled melt down has left the Republican Party with an approval rating so low even Republican Senator John McCain jumped ship…he called them “wacko birds”.

So what was the point? The only change to the ACA was stricter income verification checks in order for applicants to qualify for subsidies…which should have been in place anyway. In fact the ACA exchanges were opened for the first time during the shutdown and were seemingly unaffected and other than some internet issues continue to thrive. What did happen was that for two weeks hundreds of thousands of federal workers went without pay, parks and monuments closed and according to Standard & Poor's (S&P) because of the jumbled financial markets the U.S. economy lost 24 billion dollars, not to mention the threat posed to the global economy and the country’s credit rating. Cruz claims that over 2 million people signed a national petition to defund the ACA as if that’s justification for shutting down the government. Yep, 2 million people signed a petition at a website run by a PAC that supports Cruz. What dumb ass is missing is the fact that by reelecting President Obama with well over 65 million votes the majority of the American people not only voted to keep the President but the ACA as well…Cruz’s 2 million petitioners don’t even comprise 2% of the estimated 165 million eligible U.S. voters. But no worries, Senator Cruz’s PAC managed to raise close to a million dollars during the same period which was no doubt funded by those 2 million idiots who signed his petition. By the way, why aren’t those birther nuts questioning this Cuban Canadian immigrant’s citizenship status, oh wait he’s not Black…never mind my bad.

So what did the Republicans get for attempting to over throw the U.S. government? Nothing, zilch, nada. Well nothing other than a well-deserved ass whooping and a political party left in complete disarray. Unfortunately, I don’t think it will stop the continuing revolt against President Obama led by right wing pundits like Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck and the nut ball Republican politicians who pander to them including Michelle Crazy Eyes Bachman, Marco Rubio, Paul Rand and a bunch of other fruit loop non-politicians like Sarah Palin. (Why won’t she just go away?) Instead of fostering bi-partisan relationships and working to create jobs to stimulate the economy they’ll instead find some other way to discredit and/or blame the President for all the worlds’ ills.  And let’s not forget the Cubanadian currently leading the charge and the man who started it all, Senator Ted Cruz. Seriously, what planet is this guy living on? He claims that polls show “the majority of Americans don’t want Obamacare”. Actually what the polls reveal is that most Americans feel the ACA doesn’t go far enough…single payer anyone? This nut should be tried for obstruction of justice or at the very least his background should be scrutinized to determine if he’s a sleeper cell sent to destroy America.

Time Machine

Last night I got up from the sofa in the den went into the bedroom and just stood there looking around…I had forgotten why I had gone into the room. This has happened to me a lot in the past few years and when I tell people about it they laugh it off and say I’m just getting old. To be honest it is kind of funny but also a little scary. At work I’ve taken to writing post-it notes with little reminders and putting them in my pocket. When I get home I dump out a dozen little pieces of yellow paper walk out of the room and of course forget to read them...it’s really frustrating. I’ve found that I actually prefer talk radio to music and when I do listen to music it’s almost always old school and is it just me or are Early Bird dinner specials beginning to sound appealing…to be honest it would give me time to get in that pre-sleep early evening nap. At work I zone out during conversations and meetings and find myself thinking of anything other than what’s currently happening. When I snap back I try to play it off but I’m sure I have a blank look on my face because I have no idea what’s going on. I stood up to walk away from my desk the other day and my knees cracked so loud people thought it was thunder and looked outside to see if there was a storm approaching. When I go out to dinner or a bar I drink at home first to save money…ok that’s just me being my cheap ass self. When going to the movies I prefer matinees as there’s the possibility I may fall asleep at an evening showing…which may or may not include snoring.  I’ve found I no longer have patience with stupid people and I have no problem letting them know…well that one’s actually a plus. Seriously, the only thing left is for me to yell out from my rocking chair on the porch, “Hey kid, get off my lawn!”

So you may ask, why all the concern? What’s the big deal, we all get old get over it. I agree completely, in fact on Saturday I’ll be celebrating my 57th birthday (why is it that whenever someone ask how old I am, I have to stop and think really, really hard) and I’ve decided that rather than bemoan the fact that I’m now old enough for senior discounts, which by the way comes in quite handy at the movies (seriously, $4.50 vs. $9.00...matinee rates of course) I will instead celebrate the fact that I’m still here and reflect on the good things in my life.  Like the fact that in spite of my cracking knees, at 57 years old I’m actually in the best shape of my life. About 15 years ago I made a deal with myself to get in shape and embarked on a strict regimen of exercise and healthy eating. I shed quite a bit of weight which I’ve managed to maintain and I still get up every morning at 4:30 AM and head to the gym for my daily workout. Or how about the fact that at this age I find myself in a healthy, stable, constantly evolving relationship and growing old with a person I still find attractive, passionate and ever intriguing. Although my memory sometimes fails me I’m thankful for the recollections of my youth, which are full of good times shared with wonderful people most of whom I’m proud to say I still have as friends. And of course there’s Pepper the absolute sweetest, lovable and very likely most spoiled dog on the planet.

I feel so blessed to have lived long enough to learn to value and love myself for all of my faults and flaws as well as my attributes, I like the person I’ve become and no longer worry about what could have been.  I am thankful for the wonderful childhood afforded to me by loving and nourishing parents both of whom I’m fortunate enough to still have with me as well as my four siblings. I’m happy to have grown old enough to appreciate the silence of sitting alone in my own thoughts, not as an escape but to contemplate the magnificence of life and all it allows. I feel privileged to have known the many who traveled with me on various points of my aging journey and mourn those who never made it this far. I’m happy in the realization that I actually like getting old with all the aches, sore bones, memory lapses and hair growing out of places where I didn’t even know I had places…seriously can someone tell me why hair suddenly chose to sprout from my ears and disappear from the top of my head?  Finally, I’m so very happy that I’m still able to articulate and share my thoughts and ideas with my friends. By the way I know I haven’t written in a while and I really meant to, I really did but I kept forgetti…uh, what was I saying?

Out Of Reach

I gotta tell you, I’m tired of waiting. Ever since President Obama killed it winning a second term and demolishing old Mittens in the process, Republicans have been promising to reach out to minority voters. They insist that they’ve seen the error of their ways and will be a more accepting, diverse, inclusive party going forward. Unfortunately, all I’ve seen is the same message of greed, homophobia, and racist voter disenfranchisement. Prominent Republican politicians such as Michelle Bachman, Ted Cruz and Mario Rubio continue to spew hate, intolerance and bigotry. The party persists in its practice of pandering to the extreme right racist and tea party baggers within the party. So where’s the outreach?

Perhaps their idea of reaching means to reach out and hold back minorities, women and the elderly. Just days after the Supreme Court’s ruling striking down a key part of the Voting Rights Act, which had required certain states and jurisdictions with a history of voter discrimination to clear all voting changes in advance with the Justice Department or federal court, the Republican legislation in red states such as Texas and North Carolina quickly sought to marginalize and discourage minority voting by attempting to enact restrictive Jim Crow era voter laws requiring I.D. to vote, slashing the number of polling precincts, minimizing precinct voting hours and slashing Sunday voting and same day registration provisions. You may recall the gargantuan lines created on Election Day in Florida and Ohio when they cancelled early voting resulting in voters waiting for up to eight hours to vote. Now, I know we all like to think that everyone has some form of I.D. but they can be very difficult and expensive to obtain for the poor and elderly. They may not have access to documents like birth certificates without incurring major expense, especially those who are over the age where all birth certificates were in an automated system. Then there would be the hassle of getting a state recognized photographic I.D. For elderly, handicapped people getting to all these offices can be exhausting if not prohibitive as well as expensive if they can no longer drive.

But it’s not just about I.D. In Texas they plan to reduce polling places from 84 to 12! The predominately "white" area polling places will serve about 6,000 voters while the most "minority" polling places will be expected to serve 86,000. In North Carolina they went as far as canceling the program which allowed 17 year old students enrolled in high school civics classes to pre-register as voters prior to their 18th birthday. They also are currently seeking to penalize college students with a bill to raise taxes on families with college students who choose to vote at school rather than at home, effectively discouraging college students from voting. In an effort to purge voter rolls for the 2012 election, Florida officials identified voters they suspected to be non-citizens and sent their information to county election supervisors who then mailed letters to voters requesting proof they were U.S. citizens. If no response was received, the voter was dropped from the rolls. Of course an excessively large majority of those identified were either Black or Hispanic. Way to reach out and touch Repubs.

At some point, the Republican Party must be held accountable for catering to the racists, the birthers and those calling the President a communist, socialist, Muslim, America-hating terrorist. They must also be taken to task for not denouncing those within their party who support and promote these crazy conspiracy theories and group based cultural generalizations such as the Limbaughs, Hannitys, Becks and O’Reillys. Oh, and let’s not forget the bigoted racist crackpots like Ted Nugent and Ann Coulter. If Republicans truly wanted to reach out they would champion economic issues that support the middle and working classes and they would actively promote the idea of equal justice for all people, which would allow them to cast a much wider net. Instead they continue to be in favor of cutting programs that benefit middle and working class families, adamantly oppose health care for the poor and elderly and can’t seem to stay out of the bedrooms of individual citizens or the wombs of grown ass women all of whom are completely capable of making decisions about the most intimate part of their lives. They persist in stereotyping, victim blaming and advocating the dismantling of programs that disproportionately affect the poor and minorities while keeping those that provide tax breaks for the rich and powerful. Their idea of reaching out appears to be keeping the poor, women and minorities in their place. They may as well just say it, "We hate you. We don't want you to vote. We want to cut out every government dime that helps the poorest among you cope with a grossly unfair economy. Now, why won't you stupid people vote for us?"

Terms Of Endearment

Ok White people let’s get this straight once and for all, you cannot use the N word just because you hear some Black people using it. The Paula Deen debate over her use of the word has brought to the surface some the most stupid ignorant arguments I’ve heard in a long time. Paula and her supporters claim to be confused as they say that they hear Black people using the word all the time. First of all, no you don’t. Contrary to what people may have you believe, in the black community the use of the N word is not as common as ants at a picnic and is a heavily debated argument. I don’t understand why you are so anxious to use the word anyway, are you a rapper or a wannabe thug? And come on, let’s stop playing stupid there is no double standard. You all know full well the offensive history of the word so stop trying to compare calling someone a white boy or a honky as being equally offensive as the N word. As far as the derogatory term cracker I have never used the word. In fact the first time I heard it used was when George Jefferson said it on an episode of The Jeffersons back in the 80s. It’s an archaic term from the early 20th century and frankly never received much use outside of the Deep South. Regardless, none of these terms carry the same weight or historical baggage as the N word.

In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, Rachel Jeantel who provided witness testimony for the prosecution in the Zimmerman trial, unsuccessfully attempted to explain the difference between the terms nigger and nigga. She stated that the term nigger was racist yet nigga was a term that could be used to describe any man, regardless of color…ok. Look, I know she was attempting to make a valid point and no offense intended but this woman has trouble articulating a thought to let you know she needs to use the restroom so why would anyone take her opinion as a statement of fact?  At any rate the poster boy for fat bigoted puffy faced racist white men, Rush Limbaugh, has decided based on Ms. Jeantel’s statement that he has a pass to toss out the word nigga like the first pitch of the World Series and did so repeatedly yesterday on his radio show. He also stated he would hereafter refer to the Chinese man at his Laundromat as his nigga beginning with his next visit and would use the term freely with any man he may encounter going forward…seriously, I would gladly contribute to a fund to have this man just disappear. And don’t get me started on the stereotypical racist implications of a Chinese Laundromat, it really must take some effort to remain that racist.  But you can’t blame him he’s simply fulfilling his job description, which is to exploit racism and white resentment and appeal to his racists listening base. Of course he says nigga on the air but if he’s so eager to as he says, “rightfully use the word” he’s free to walk into the middle of any inner city housing project located in any major city and scream it at the top of his lungs…no guarantee he’ll live to tell about it but that could take care of that disappearance fund.

Now I’ve been known to drop the N bomb now and then but I also understand the term discretion. I don’t walk into an office meeting with a room full of white people and holler to the lone Black in the room, “James my nigga, wassup?” I understand where the word came from and how it was used to demean and degrade Black people and to keep us in our place.  I’m aware of how those who fought and died for civil rights would cringe at how freely the word is used today among Black people. But I also know that not all Black people think alike as some would have you believe and there are differing opinions on the use of the word within the community. In fact attempts by the NAACP to officially bury the word brought about varying views but did nothing to extricate the word and the argument continues. What Rachel Jeantel attempted to convey is that my nigga, f**k you nigga, nigger please or damn, that nigger got game are often terms of endearment and are ultimately different when recited by a Black person. It doesn’t matter whether you think you can use it as a term of endearment as well because quite simply, you can’t. So, yes White, people there are words Black people can use that you can’t but you’ve got the whole white male, birthright entitlement, institutionalized racism thing down to a science…so get over it.

Murder By Numbers

Note to self: Do not walk alone at night anywhere within the state of Florida (under any circumstance). What would you do if you were being followed in the dark, in the rain, by a strange man? What if you decided to run and he continued to pursue? Would you wait for him to attack or attack first? Would you fight for your life, or would you stand there and wait for the unknown? To say that I’m disappointed by the Zimmerman trial verdict doesn’t begin to express my feelings. I’m disappointed, hurt, angry and fearful for the lives of young African-American boys as this verdict has deemed their lives less important than those of any other race. This jury has affirmed that if you are a young black child minding your own business an individual can stalk you on the street and if a confrontation arises, you can be legally murdered without consequence.

Apparently the defense was successful in their efforts to place Trayvon Martin on trial and convict him for his own murder. The one strolling home with a passion for Skittles, Arizona Iced Tea and wearing hoodies, is the one who was convicted. The one who was racially profiled and assumed to be guilty because of walking while Black was convicted. Not the one driving around looking for trouble hoping to create a confrontation in order to use his gun. Not the wannabe cop and self-appointed neighborhood watchman who was told to stay in his vehicle and not pursue. Not the one who was also told to let the police deal with it if in fact there was anything with which to deal. Not the one who after shooting an unarmed child rather than yell for someone to call for an ambulance or dial 911 instead for some strange reason, turned the victim over and spread his arms out. No not him. He was found innocent and blameless.

I’m also disappointed with the way the prosecution tried this case. How is it that a grown man stalked a 17 year old child against the advice of authority then after the child ran he caught up with him and when the child attempted to defend himself, he was shot and killed? I don’t claim to be a legal expert but it pretty much sounds like a slam dunk case to me. How in the hell is Zimmerman allowed to claim self-defense when based on his own assumptions of who Trayvon Martin was, he initiates the confrontation with his decision to ignore the dispatcher and get out of the car with a gun? At the very least it sounds like negligent homicide. It was Zimmerman’s reckless and stupid decisions which led directly to the death of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman was looking for a confrontation and when he couldn’t handle it he shot and killed an innocent kid. Why was this so difficult to prove? Instead the prosecution allowed the defense to make it all about the fight between Zimmerman and Trayvon and to paint Trayvon as the aggressor.

Still, I really would like to speak with the women from the jury. Regardless of their race I just want to understand how a jury of six mothers could come to such a conclusion. I’d like to know how they would expect their child to react to similar circumstances, how they found Zimmerman completely guiltless and lastly I truly would like to know how they sleep at night.
